MPAI Joins Global Call for One Million More Midwives

The Midwifery Practitioners Association, India (MPAI) proudly announces its support for the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and the PUSH campaign in launching the global movement 'One Million More Midwives'. This initiative calls upon governments and global health leaders to grow, support, and sustain the midwifery workforce worldwide.

A Global Petition with a Powerful Message

Every two minutes, a woman dies from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. Every 17 seconds, a baby is lost before birth, and each year 2.3 million newborns die within the first 28 days of life. These tragedies are often preventable — and midwives are the key to change.

Research shows that with one million more midwives, the world could prevent 67% of maternal deaths, 64% of newborn deaths, and 65% of stillbirths — saving 4.3 million lives by 2035.

What the Campaign Demands

The petition urges global and national leaders to:

Invest in midwives as essential healthcare providers and ensure they can practice to their full scope.
Equip midwives with education, skills, and supportive environments.
Empower midwifery leadership to influence healthcare policies.

The petition will remain open until the ICM Triennial Congress in Lisbon, June 2026, where signatures will be presented to policymakers.
